Quester Quiz Corner: When an antique porcelain piece is said to be “clobbered”, what does it mean?
Answer: In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when pieces of Chinese export porcelain were sent to European factories to have decoration put on with additions such as bordering, foliage, figures, animals, birds or full landscapes or scenery, there was sometimes a disregard for the old underglaze blue and white decorations as if it wasn’t there. When a European artist embellished a piece too much or without skill, the object was considered “clobbered”.
